Abbott’s Project Ksheersagar Uplifts India’s Dairy Farmers

To ensure good nutrition begins with quality milk, Abbott partnered with TechnoServe in 2022 to launch Project Ksheersagar, a shared-value initiative aimed at empowering dairy farmers and strengthening India’s raw milk supply chain.

Active across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, the project supports farmers through financial literacy training, business development, and modern dairy management practices. It also promotes sustainable methods in animal care, feed quality, and milk handling.

With 130 village-based milk collection centres, farmers now have access to reliable cold storage and fairer pricing. So far, the initiative has reached 12,000 farmers and improved the welfare of 51,000 dairy animals, resulting in a 60% decrease in veterinary costs and a 55% increase in milk productivity.

According to Joydeep Dutta, Country Director of TechnoServe India, standardised dairy practices have improved both incomes and milk quality. Abbott’s Shibasish Pramanik adds that the company plans to source 60% of its milk powder locally, reinforcing a sustainable and self-reliant dairy ecosystem.

By merging corporate expertise with grassroots empowerment, Project Ksheersagar is creating a more resilient, efficient, and inclusive dairy supply chain benefiting farmers, consumers, and the future of India’s dairy industry.
