Amul Targets Israel’s Mainstream Dairy Market with Expanded Export Portfolio

Amul is poised to deepen its footprint in Israel as the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) prepares to broaden its dairy export range beyond ghee, signalling a strategic shift towards mainstream consumer integration rather than serving only the Indian diaspora. GCMMF Managing Director Jayen Mehta, who is part of a 60-member Indian business delegation led by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, confirmed the development during a bilateral engagement in Israel.

Currently, Amul exports ghee to Israel, but the cooperative is now working to achieve full Kosher compliance, a prerequisite for entering the country’s core dairy market, which is governed by Jewish dietary laws. Mehta noted that Kosher certification represents a rigorous, process-based validation essential for gaining acceptance beyond niche ethnic segments.

The move comes as India, the world’s largest milk producer, looks to strengthen its global dairy presence. Israel, renowned for its advanced herd management, high-tech feeding systems, and arid-zone dairy innovations, offers India valuable opportunities for technological collaboration. Mehta highlighted that adopting Israeli technology in cattle productivity, feeding efficiency, and animal management could enhance India’s dairy performance, particularly in resource-challenged regions.

Amul’s expansion effort reflects a broader strategy: leveraging India’s production strength while aligning with international food standards to enter premium global dairy markets. The initiative not only reinforces India’s dairy export ambitions but also underscores the growing synergy between Indian cooperatives and Israeli agritech expertise.
