Sri Vijaya Puram, July 30: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Andaman & Nicobar (A&N) Administration, has successfully concluded a two-week animal infertility intervention drive (July 16–29, 2025) aimed at improving livestock productivity and supporting rural farmers’ livelihoods. The initiative reached 83 villages across the Islands’ rural regions and focused on addressing reproductive health and nutrition challenges in cattle.

During the drive, veterinary teams examined 2,299 cows out of 4,548 breedable animals. The comprehensive clinical interventions included:

Beyond clinical care, the AH&VS Department conducted farmer awareness programs that trained livestock owners on best practices in animal husbandry. The sessions covered balanced feeding regimens, disease prevention, and reproductive care techniques to enable farmers to maintain healthier herds and achieve sustainable calving cycles.

“Addressing infertility and nutritional deficiencies in cattle is crucial for improving milk yields and rural incomes,” said an official from AH&VS. “These interventions are part of our continued commitment to strengthen the rural economy and promote food security in the Islands.”

The initiative highlights the A&N Administration’s long-term strategy to improve livestock productivity as a means to enhance farmers’ income and promote sustainable rural livelihoods. The AH&VS Department has confirmed plans to carry out similar targeted drives in the future to ensure that all breedable animals contribute effectively to the Islands’ dairy and livestock sector.
