Food safety authorities in Bengaluru have intensified inspections across the city, widening their crackdown from luxury hotels and restaurants to government-run Indira Canteens.
Officials from the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department inspected food preparation and storage facilities at several establishments and issued notices over alleged violations of food safety and hygiene requirements.
Rotten Meat and Expired Dairy Products Found
During inspections conducted across Bengaluru, officials reportedly seized and disposed of 132 kg of food items, including rotten chicken and beef. Some of the meat was found with fungal growth, raising concerns over storage and food-handling practices.
At an upscale rooftop lounge in UB City, officials also found expired milk and curd packets. The kitchen was subsequently closed after inspectors reportedly found unhygienic conditions.
60 Hotels Inspected
As part of a three-day special food safety drive, officials inspected 60 three-star and five-star hotels across Bengaluru Urban district.
During the inspections, authorities collected 77 food samples and sent them to laboratories for detailed analysis.
Key Violations Reported
Officials reported several alleged food safety violations, including:
- Expired food products
- Improper storage of meat and fish
- Unhygienic food-handling conditions
- Fungal growth on vegetables
- Inadequate segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food
- Poorly maintained kitchen areas
- Food stored under unsuitable hygiene conditions
Establishments where violations were detected were issued notices, while further action has been recommended in cases requiring stricter enforcement.
Laboratory Testing to Determine Further Action
The 77 food samples collected during the inspection drive have been sent for laboratory analysis. The results will help authorities determine whether additional regulatory or legal action is required.
Indira Canteens Also Under Scanner
The latest phase of the crackdown has also extended to Indira Canteens in Bommanahalli and Lingarajpuram.
The move indicates that the food safety inspection drive is not limited to premium hotels and restaurants. Government-run food establishments are also being examined for compliance with hygiene and food safety standards.
Officials are expected to continue inspecting food preparation and storage facilities across Bengaluru, with establishments found violating regulations facing notices and possible further action.
The ongoing inspections highlight the importance of proper food storage, hygiene, quality control and safe handling practices across the food-service sector.
