Bengaluru Food Safety Crackdown Uncovers Rotten Meat and Expired Dairy

Bengaluru: Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drugs Administration Department has intensified inspections across hotels, restaurants, pubs and food storage facilities in Bengaluru, uncovering rotten meat, expired dairy products, unhygienic kitchens, fungal growth and improperly stored food.

The crackdown has targeted both premium hospitality establishments and food-supply facilities, with officials issuing notices and sending samples for laboratory testing. Recent inspections across the city have resulted in the seizure or disposal of significant quantities of food products found unfit for consumption.

Rotten Meat and Expired Dairy Found at UB City Lounge

During an inspection at Skyye Lounge in UB City, officials found an unhygienic kitchen and seized 45 kg of rotten chicken and beef, reportedly showing signs of fungal growth. Another 6 kg of vegetable cutlets and 15 litres of used cooking oil were also found unfit for consumption and disposed of.

Officials also discovered milk and curd that had expired around 10 days earlier. The kitchen was subsequently shut down as part of the enforcement action.

132 Kg of Food Seized in Restaurant Inspections

A separate inspection drive covering restaurants and pubs resulted in the seizure or disposal of 132 kg of food products and 15 litres of used cooking oil.

At other establishments, officials found:

The food was seized or destroyed according to safety procedures.

60 Three- and Five-Star Hotels Inspected

The wider enforcement campaign covered 60 three-star and five-star hotels across Bengaluru Urban district. Food safety teams conducted inspections and collected 77 food samples for laboratory analysis.

The inspections covered meat, chicken, fish, dairy products, cooking oil, bakery products, sauces and other food items.

Officials reported several violations, including:

Dairy Products Also Under Scrutiny

Dairy safety has emerged as one of the concerns during the inspections, with expired milk, curd and other dairy products found at hospitality establishments.

The findings highlight the importance of temperature control, inventory management, expiry-date monitoring and cold-chain practices in ensuring dairy products remain safe throughout storage and food preparation.

The issue is particularly significant for products such as milk and curd, which require appropriate storage conditions to maintain quality and safety.

Food Supply and Storage Facilities Inspected

The enforcement drive has also moved beyond restaurants to food storage and distribution facilities supplying hotels and caterers.

Officials inspected facilities handling meat, fish, sauces, beverages and other food products, with samples collected for laboratory testing. This wider approach allows authorities to examine food safety across the supply chain rather than focusing only on restaurants and kitchens.

Further Action Expected

Officials have issued notices to establishments where violations were detected. Laboratory results from the collected samples will determine whether additional regulatory or legal action is required.

The inspections underline the need for food businesses to maintain proper storage conditions, monitor product expiry dates and follow food-safety regulations consistently.

The enforcement campaign also sends a clear message that food businesses, regardless of their size or reputation, remain subject to food-safety standards and regulatory inspection.
