Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has called for a major scale-up in the state’s milk production and processing capacity, emphasising the need for stronger cooperative-led growth to meet rising demand. Chairing a review meeting with senior officials and dairy representatives, he said that while Bihar’s milk output has increased steadily, the state must now focus on modernising infrastructure and widening procurement networks.
Kumar noted that processing plants, chilling centres, and value-added manufacturing units require urgent expansion to align with current consumption patterns. He underscored the importance of building capacity in paneer, ghee, curd, and other high-margin dairy categories, which can significantly enhance farmer earnings.
The Chief Minister also stressed improvements in fodder supply, veterinary services, and doorstep collection systems, stating that these interventions are essential for long-term productivity. Strengthening cooperative unions under COMFED, he added, will help secure stable income for milk producers and position Bihar more firmly in India’s growing dairy economy.
