BL Agro to Invest Rs 1,500 Crore in Dairy Genetics

India-based FMCG company BL Agro has announced an investment of Rs 1,500 crore in its biotechnology subsidiary Leads Genetics to develop an integrated genetics and reproductive-technology ecosystem for the dairy sector.

The investment was announced during the two-day Cattle Genomics Summit 2026 in Bareilly and is aimed at developing a 360-degree circular economy model covering cattle genetics, breeding, animal health, nutrition, milk production, processing and market linkages.

Integrated Dairy and Genetics Ecosystem

BL Agro is in discussions with Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh to replicate the model across multiple states.

The proposed ecosystem will bring several breed-improvement capabilities under one roof, including an integrated Breed Improvement Farm, IVF-ET Laboratory, Multiple Ovulation Embryo Transfer (MOET) facility, Pathology Laboratory and Genomics Laboratory.

The company said the model will connect different stages of the breed-improvement value chain while also supporting farmers through extension and outreach programmes.

Focus on Advanced Cattle Genetics

The Cattle Genomics Summit brought together scientists, breeders, researchers and industry stakeholders working in genomics, IVF, advanced sequencing, genetic evaluation and data-driven breeding.

A major development showcased at the event was the arrival of the first Zebu-optimised bovine SNP chip at Leads Genetics. The company also demonstrated next-generation sequencing using the Illumina NovaSeq X platform.

The genomic chip enables DNA analysis across thousands of genetic markers. This can support genomic estimated breeding values and earlier identification of cattle with desirable traits.

These traits can include milk production, fertility, growth, health, heat tolerance and resistance to ticks and parasites.

Accelerating Genetic Improvement

Traditional cattle breeding generally requires multiple generations and progeny data before genetic potential can be assessed with greater confidence. Genomic technologies can enable earlier selection of animals based on their genetic markers.

Leads Genetics plans to combine genomics with IVF, embryo transfer and sex-sorted semen to multiply and distribute selected genetics more rapidly.

The company said the approach is also focused on developing cattle populations suited to Indian climatic conditions and strengthening domestic genetic capabilities.

Supporting Indigenous Breeds and Farmers

BL Agro Chairman Dr Ghanshyam Khandelwal said farmers remain central to the company’s circular economy model. According to the company, improved genetics could support higher milk productivity, reproductive performance and the long-term value of cattle while creating additional income opportunities.

The company expects genetically selected cows to achieve average milk yields of 40–60 litres per day, although actual productivity can vary depending on genetics, nutrition, health and farm management.

The initiative also aims to strengthen indigenous cattle breeds rather than replace them. Leads Genetics said it is working to produce elite bulls, embryos and sexed semen domestically, potentially reducing reliance on imported high-end genetics.

Target of 15,000 Embryos Monthly

Leads Genetics is developing a Centre of Excellence focused on scaling advanced embryo-production technologies.

According to Dr Sarvannan Durairaj, Head of IVF-MOET at Leads Genetics, the company is targeting production of 15,000 embryos per month by the end of 2027.

The planned capacity is intended to make selected genetics available on a larger scale and accelerate genetic improvement across India’s dairy sector.

India-Brazil Genetics Partnership

The developments also reflect the India-Brazil cattle-genetics partnership formalised through an agreement in Brasília.

The summit coincided with India’s BRICS Presidency and the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, providing a broader platform for showcasing developments in livestock genomics and biotechnology.

BL Agro said its investment in Leads Genetics will focus on capacity building, scientific dairy practices and employment opportunities for rural youth. The broader objective is to strengthen India’s domestic genetic capabilities while improving productivity and resilience across the livestock sector.
