Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday inaugurated Aavin’s new state central laboratory at the dairy complex in Madhavaram, Chennai, strengthening the cooperative dairy’s milk quality and testing infrastructure. Established at a cost of ₹2.2 crore, the laboratory is designed to conduct quality tests required by Aavin and district cooperative milk producers’ unions.
The Chief Minister also inspected operations at the Madhavaram dairy and reviewed construction of a new dairy facility at the complex, which is being developed with an investment of ₹152.3 crore and will have a milk-handling capacity of seven lakh litres per day.
Central Laboratory to Support Milk Quality and Safety
According to an official release, the new laboratory has been designed to conduct all quality tests required by Aavin and the state’s district cooperative milk producers’ unions.
The facility is expected to strengthen centralised testing capabilities for the cooperative dairy network and support systematic monitoring of milk quality. Regular testing is important across the dairy supply chain, where quality can be affected during procurement, transportation, processing, storage and distribution.
The laboratory will also conduct drinking water tests according to standards prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). This will allow water used in dairy operations to be monitored against prescribed quality requirements.
In addition, wastewater generated by dairy operations will be tested in accordance with regulations established by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB).
The facility therefore extends beyond milk testing to cover important water and environmental compliance requirements associated with modern dairy processing.
₹152.3-Crore Dairy Facility Under Construction
During his visit to the Madhavaram complex, Vijay also reviewed the construction of a new dairy facility.
The project has an estimated investment of ₹152.3 crore and will have a milk-handling capacity of seven lakh litres per day once operational.
The planned facility represents a major addition to Aavin’s processing infrastructure. Higher milk-handling capacity can enable the cooperative to process larger volumes of milk and strengthen its ability to meet demand across Tamil Nadu.
The development of processing infrastructure alongside laboratory facilities could also improve the integration of quality monitoring with dairy operations. Testing at different stages of processing can help identify deviations and support timely corrective measures.
Focus on Dairy Quality and Environmental Compliance
For the dairy industry, laboratory infrastructure plays an important role in maintaining product safety and consistency. Milk quality testing can help monitor parameters required under food safety standards, while water testing is particularly relevant because water is used extensively in dairy processing and cleaning operations.
Wastewater management is another important consideration for large dairy plants. Dairy processing generates wastewater containing organic matter and other residues, making appropriate monitoring and treatment necessary to meet environmental requirements.
Aavin’s new laboratory will therefore support three interconnected areas: milk and product quality, water quality and environmental compliance.
The investment comes as dairy cooperatives and processing companies across India increasingly focus on modernising infrastructure and strengthening quality assurance systems. Consumers are also becoming more conscious of food safety and product quality, increasing the importance of reliable testing and compliance.
For Aavin, the Madhavaram complex is set to receive both improved testing infrastructure and additional processing capacity. The ₹2.2-crore central laboratory will provide testing capabilities for Aavin and district cooperative milk producers’ unions, while the new ₹152.3-crore dairy will significantly increase milk-handling capacity.
Together, the projects could strengthen Aavin’s operational capabilities while supporting greater emphasis on milk quality, food safety and environmental standards.
The developments also highlight the importance of investing in both physical processing capacity and scientific quality-control infrastructure as India’s dairy sector continues to expand.
