Elanco Strengthens Dairy Health Solutions with AHV International Acquisition

USA-based Elanco Animal Health has completed the acquisition of Dutch farm animal health innovator AHV International, marking a significant expansion of its dairy animal health and nutrition portfolio amid growing global demand for sustainable dairy farming and improved herd productivity.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen Elanco’s presence in the evolving global dairy sector by adding specialised transition cow management products, feed-linked health technologies, and preventive dairy health solutions designed to improve milk production efficiency while reducing antibiotic dependency.

Industry experts believe the move reflects broader transformation trends across the Indian dairy industry and global milk production systems, where producers are increasingly investing in proactive herd management strategies to tackle rising feed costs, disease pressures, and sustainability expectations.

Ramiro M. Cabral said the integration of AHV’s technologies would provide dairy producers and veterinarians with additional tools to improve dairy herd health and operational efficiency.

“The AHV addition is a strategic fit for Elanco by providing innovative tools for producers and veterinarians to improve the well-being of dairy cows,” Cabral said.

Focus on Transition Cow Health and Dairy Productivity

AHV International has developed several dairy-focused solutions aimed at improving animal welfare, transition management, and production stability during critical stages of lactation.

Among its notable technologies is StopLac, a product designed to manage milk production during the dry-off phase, helping dairy farmers improve transition cow health while reducing stress during the end of lactation.

The company also offers Quorum Sensing Technology, which uses plant-derived extracts to disrupt bacterial biofilms and support the cow’s natural immune response. Elanco believes this technology can contribute to reduced antibiotic use while supporting sustainable dairy farming and long-term herd productivity.

The acquisition strengthens Elanco’s strategy of integrating nutrition, feed efficiency, and preventive health management into modern dairy operations. This approach is increasingly gaining traction across dairy sector India and international dairy markets as producers seek to improve milk yields while maintaining animal welfare and environmental sustainability.

Growing Demand for Preventive Dairy Health Solutions

Global dairy producers continue to face challenges linked to rising input costs, disease outbreaks, and pressure to produce affordable dairy products sustainably.

According to the World Organisation for Animal Health, disease and livestock mortality contribute to nearly 20% of global productivity losses annually, significantly affecting dairy farm profitability and food security.

As a result, dairy technology India and global dairy farming innovations are increasingly focused on preventive healthcare, precision dairy farming, and nutrition-based intervention systems that improve herd resilience and production consistency.

Elanco stated that combining AHV’s innovation capabilities with its global technical expertise and distribution infrastructure could accelerate adoption of integrated dairy management systems worldwide.

The deal also reflects the wider industry shift toward combining animal nutrition, dairy health solutions, and sustainability-focused production models to meet growing dairy market demand while improving operational efficiency.

For dairy producers, cooperatives, and veterinary professionals, the acquisition signals continued investment in advanced dairy production technologies that support healthier cows, improved milk quality, and more sustainable dairy operations.
