Porbandar, Gujarat: Authorities in Gujarat have detained a man after allegedly uncovering the preparation and storage of suspected adulterated milk at a residence in Timbinesh village, located under the Kutiyana police station limits in Porbandar district.
The action was taken by the Porbandar Local Crime Branch (LCB) after officials received information about the alleged preparation of adulterated milk. Acting on the tip-off, an LCB team conducted a raid at the residence of Sarman Kodiyatar, situated near Jay Mataji Milk Dairy.
During the operation, the team reportedly recovered around 30 litres of suspected adulterated milk. Officials also seized a significant quantity of materials that were allegedly being used in the preparation of the product.
Among the seized items were approximately 75 kg of skimmed milk powder, consisting of two sealed 25-kg bags and two partially filled bags. The authorities also recovered 14 tins of palmolein, along with other materials suspected to have been involved in the preparation of the milk.
Food Safety Officials Collect Samples
Following the discovery, the LCB informed the local food safety authorities. A food safety officer reached the location and collected samples of the suspected adulterated milk for laboratory examination.
The remaining quantity of the suspected milk was reportedly destroyed at the spot following the collection of samples. The laboratory results are expected to help authorities determine the nature and extent of the alleged adulteration.
The investigation will also examine the purpose of the seized milk powder, palmolein and other materials and whether they were being used to manufacture products intended for commercial sale.
Legal Action Initiated
Police have initiated legal proceedings against Kodiyatar under the Food Safety and Standards Act. Further action is expected depending on the findings of the food safety investigation and laboratory testing.
The case highlights the importance of regulatory monitoring across the dairy supply chain, particularly in preventing the production and distribution of milk products that may not meet prescribed food safety and quality standards.
Concerns Over Milk Quality
Milk is a widely consumed staple, making quality control and food safety enforcement particularly important. Incidents involving suspected adulteration can also affect consumer confidence in dairy products and create reputational challenges for the wider dairy sector.
The seizure of milk powder and palmolein alongside the suspected adulterated milk has prompted scrutiny of the alleged preparation process. Authorities will need to establish whether the materials were being used to alter the composition of milk and whether any such product had entered the market.
