Stronger international dairy markets are raising expectations among Irish dairy farmers for improved milk prices in the forthcoming October payment announcements. The Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers’ Association (ICMSA) has called on dairy co-operatives and processors to ensure that recent improvements in global commodity prices are reflected in the payments received by milk suppliers.
ICMSA dairy chair Noel Murphy said several positive market indicators, including stronger Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction results, an increase in the Ornua Purchase Price Index (PPI), improving European dairy commodity quotations and sustained demand for dairy proteins, point towards a more favourable outlook for milk prices.
Murphy stressed that the recent improvement in international dairy market conditions must translate into higher farmgate milk prices without delay, particularly after Irish dairy farmers have experienced an extended period of significant production and operating costs.
Ornua PPI and Global Dairy Trade Signal Stronger Milk Price Outlook
The latest Ornua Purchase Price Index recorded an increase of 2.7 cents per litre during the month, reaching 40.9 cents per litre. According to Murphy, this figure should represent the minimum base price that Irish dairy farmers can reasonably expect from their co-operatives in the October milk price announcements.
The improvement in the Ornua PPI is supported by stronger international dairy trading activity. The latest Global Dairy Trade auction recorded a 3% increase in its overall price index, reflecting improved market sentiment and stronger demand for key dairy commodities.
Whole milk powder (WMP) recorded a particularly notable increase of 5.9%, while skimmed milk powder (SMP) prices rose by 3.1%. These developments are significant for Ireland’s dairy industry, as milk powders represent important components of international dairy trade and contribute to the overall value of processed milk.
The continued improvement in these commodity prices indicates strengthening purchasing interest across major importing regions. It also suggests that international buyers are showing greater confidence in dairy market conditions.
Murphy highlighted that the importance of the latest GDT auction extends beyond the immediate price increases. The sustained upward movement in products that underpin Irish milk values provides a stronger foundation for improved returns throughout the dairy supply chain.
European Dairy Commodity Markets Add to Positive Momentum
Alongside international auction results, European dairy commodity markets are also showing signs of strengthening. Dutch and wider European dairy quotations remain at levels that, according to the ICMSA, should support improved returns for milk processors and suppliers.
Skimmed milk powder prices have strengthened considerably in recent months, providing an important source of support for dairy commodity values. This development is particularly relevant to European dairy producers, as milk powder prices influence the commercial value of milk processed into internationally traded products.
The positive movement comes despite continued high milk production volumes across several major exporting countries. Higher milk availability can generally place downward pressure on commodity prices, making the recent strengthening in European and international markets particularly encouraging.
The combination of improving powder prices, stronger auction results and sustained demand for dairy proteins is creating more favourable market conditions for dairy processors.
Farmers Expect Higher Returns Amid Persistent Production Costs
Despite the improving market outlook, Irish dairy farmers continue to face considerable financial pressures. Feed, fertiliser, environmental compliance and other operational expenses have contributed to increased production costs across dairy farms.
The ICMSA believes that stronger commodity prices should provide an opportunity for farmers to recover some of these expenses through improved milk payments. Murphy emphasised that processors must ensure that the additional value generated by stronger markets is fairly reflected in the prices paid to milk suppliers.
He also called for a proportionate response from all dairy co-operatives, arguing that positive market indicators should lead to tangible improvements in farmgate returns rather than remaining limited to higher commodity trading values.
October Milk Price Announcements Under Close Watch
The forthcoming October milk price announcements will be an important indicator of how effectively Irish dairy processors are responding to improved market conditions.
With the Ornua PPI reaching 40.9 cents per litre and the latest GDT auction recording further gains, dairy farmers will be closely monitoring the decisions of their respective co-operatives.
For Ireland’s dairy industry, the relationship between international commodity prices, processor returns and farmgate milk payments remains central to maintaining the financial sustainability of milk production.
The ICMSA expects processors to recognise the positive market developments and deliver improved October milk prices. Whether these expectations are fully reflected in the forthcoming announcements will determine how much of the recent recovery in dairy markets ultimately reaches Irish milk producers.
