Indian Ghee Products Earn Place Among World’s Iconic Butters

GirOrganic A2 Gir Cow Ghee and Amul Pure Ghee ranked sixth on TasteAtlas’ global list

New Delhi: Two Indian dairy products have earned a place among TasteAtlas’ selection of the world’s best and most iconic butter products, highlighting the growing international recognition of Indian dairy traditions.

GirOrganic’s A2 Gir Cow Ghee and Amul’s Pure Ghee were both ranked No. 6 on the list, alongside products from established dairy markets including Denmark, England, Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand and the United States.

TasteAtlas, a food-focused platform known for ranking traditional foods and products from around the world, described its selection as a compilation of the “Best and iconic butters around the world.”

The ranking considered factors including product quality, craftsmanship, premium positioning, history, international recognition and cultural significance.

Indian ghee gains global recognition

The inclusion of two Indian products places traditional Indian ghee alongside some of the world’s best-known butter products.

GirOrganic’s A2 Gir Cow Ghee was selected as one of the Indian representatives. The product is made using milk from Gir cows and is marketed around traditional preparation methods and the cultural heritage associated with A2 ghee.

The second Indian entry was Amul Pure Ghee, produced by one of India’s largest and most recognisable dairy brands.

Amul’s ghee is known for its characteristic aroma and granular texture, qualities commonly associated with traditionally prepared ghee.

The recognition provides an international platform for products that are deeply connected to India’s dairy and culinary traditions.

What makes a product “best” or “iconic”?

TasteAtlas distinguishes between products considered “Best” and those regarded as “Iconic.”

The “Best” classification focuses primarily on attributes such as exceptional quality, craftsmanship and premium credentials.

The “Iconic” category, meanwhile, considers a product’s historical roots, cultural significance and recognition beyond its place of origin.

Some products can fall into both categories when they combine strong quality credentials with a long-standing cultural identity.

For Indian ghee, this distinction is particularly relevant because ghee has traditionally played an important role in Indian cooking, food culture and household dairy consumption.

The ranking features products from numerous dairy-producing countries, demonstrating the diversity of butter-making traditions worldwide.

A spotlight on India’s dairy heritage

The recognition comes at a time when Indian dairy products are increasingly reaching consumers beyond the domestic market.

Ghee occupies a distinctive position within India’s dairy sector because it combines food, tradition and cultural identity. Unlike conventional butter products commonly associated with European dairy markets, ghee is produced by clarifying butter and has long been used in Indian cuisine.

The TasteAtlas recognition therefore represents more than a ranking for individual products. It also highlights the potential of Indian dairy products with strong cultural and traditional identities to compete for international attention.

For Indian dairy companies and cooperatives, global recognition of products such as ghee could support efforts to build stronger premium and value-added dairy categories.

Recognition for Indian dairy brands

The joint appearance of GirOrganic and Amul on the global list also demonstrates the range of India’s dairy industry, from specialised products built around indigenous cattle breeds to offerings from large-scale cooperative dairy brands.

As Indian dairy companies increasingly explore premiumisation, exports and value-added products, international recognition can help strengthen the visibility of India’s traditional dairy offerings.

The TasteAtlas ranking puts Indian ghee alongside established butter products from some of the world’s leading dairy-producing regions, providing another example of how India’s dairy heritage is gaining attention on the global food stage.
