Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has announced a comprehensive roadmap to double the state’s share in India’s milk production—from 9% to 20%, signalling an aggressive push for the modernisation of the dairy sector. The announcement came during a high-level review of the state’s agreement with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), held at Samatva Bhavan, the CM’s official residence.
Yadav emphasised the importance of leveraging NDDB’s technical and operational expertise across cooperative unions and within private sector dairies. Consultancy and infrastructure development must be made available equitably. We must adopt a whole-of-state approach,” he said.
Core Pillars of the Roadmap
- Breed Improvement: The CM directed officials to simplify interstate procurement of high-yielding cattle breeds for farmers to boost productivity.
- Value Addition Mandate: Yadav underscored that no raw milk should leave the state without value addition, encouraging local processing and branding.
- Cow Shelter Modernisation: Better-managed cow shelters, linked with veterinary universities and technical experts, were identified as a potential milk productivity booster.
- Educational Integration: The state urged private universities to introduce academic programs in dairy technology and animal husbandry, helping build future-ready talent.
Digitisation and Institutional Reform
Key to the reform agenda is the implementation of the Automatic Milk Collection System (AMCS) and end-to-end digitisation of the dairy value chain. As part of the NDDB partnership, the board now directly nominates the CEOS of various dairy federations across MP to ensure efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
The NDDB aims to establish primary dairy cooperative societies in at least 50% of the state’s villages within five years, aligning with its broader national mandate. To ensure remunerative prices for farmers, milk procurement rates have already been raised, and expert committees are reviewing quality control and cold chain practices.
Infrastructure and Cooperative Expansion
Using updated technology, new-generation dairy infrastructure—spanning milk collection, chilling, processing, and value-added product development—will be developed. Simultaneously, the network of cooperative societies is being expanded to deepen last-mile access and aggregation.
