Mother Dairy Launches Naturally Degradable Milk Pouch in Soil, Strengthening Sustainable Dairy Packaging Push

In a significant step towards sustainable packaging innovation in the Indian dairy industry, Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), has unveiled a naturally degradable milk pouch designed for large-scale commercial milk distribution and intended for use in soil.

The packaging innovation was launched in New Delhi by Dr Meenesh Shah, Chairman, NDDB and Mother Dairy, and Shri Jayatheertha Chary, Managing Director, Mother Dairy.

Developed after more than four years of dedicated research and development, the pouch has been engineered to naturally degrade in soil through microbial activity while remaining recyclable within existing waste management systems. According to Mother Dairy, the material gradually transforms into bioavailable wax and subsequently breaks down into natural elements through the action of microbes present in soil.

The development marks another major milestone in India’s growing shift towards eco-friendly dairy packaging and sustainable dairy farming practices. It also reflects the increasing emphasis on plastic waste management and green dairy practices across India’s dairy sector.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Meenesh Shah stated that the Indian dairy industry, as the world’s largest milk producer, represents scale, inclusivity, and responsibility, with sustainability deeply embedded throughout the dairy value chain.

He noted that milk pouch packaging remains critical to ensuring affordable and convenient access to milk for millions of consumers across India. He further highlighted that the newly developed pouch does not require any change in consumer usage behaviour and that the initiative will not impact milk prices.

Material Innovation and Sustainability Focus

Mother Dairy stated that the packaging material has been specifically designed to maintain the strength, flexibility and food safety standards necessary for liquid milk distribution under Indian supply chain conditions. The pouch remains compatible with existing cold-chain logistics and milk packaging operations while incorporating naturally degradable characteristics.

Industry observers believe the innovation could help reduce the long-term environmental burden associated with conventional plastic milk packaging by addressing fugitive plastic waste. The dual functionality of recyclability combined with natural degradation is being viewed as a notable advancement in dairy technology in India.

The development also comes amid increasing sustainability initiatives within the dairy sector. Earlier, Karnataka Milk Federation’s Nandini brand had introduced biodegradable milk packets made using plant-based materials as part of its eco-friendly packaging efforts. Mother Dairy’s latest innovation adds a new dimension to sustainable packaging by combining recyclability with natural soil-degradation technology for large-scale commercial deployment.

Dr Shah further emphasised that Mother Dairy has been an early adopter of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiatives and has established itself as a Plastic Waste Neutral organisation. He said the latest innovation reinforces NDDB and Mother Dairy’s long-term commitment towards responsible innovation, accessibility, affordability and environmental sustainability.

The naturally degradable packaging will initially be introduced through Mother Dairy’s Cow Milk variant across Delhi-NCR beginning on World Environment Day 2026.

The move is expected to encourage broader adoption of sustainable packaging technologies across the Indian dairy industry as cooperatives and private dairy companies continue exploring environmentally responsible alternatives for milk distribution.
