Guwahati: In a significant stride for Northeast India’s dairy sector, the West Assam Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd. (WAMUL), popularly known by its flagship brand Purabi Dairy, has announced major expansion plans while clocking an impressive turnover of Rs. 320 crore for FY 2024-25, marking a 25% year-on-year growth.
The announcement was accompanied by the news of four new milk processing units planned in Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, and Silchar. The Silchar unit, already under takeover, is expected to be fully functional by September–October 2025. These additions will boost Purabi’s market presence and strengthen supply chains across Assam and adjoining states.
“Crossing the Rs. 300-crore mark reflects our commitment to quality, farmer welfare, and consumer trust. We’re now targeting Rs. 450 crore turnover in FY 2025-26,” said Sameer Kumar Parida, Managing Director, WAMUL.
Purabi Dairy currently operates its largest processing unit in Guwahati and a smaller one at Dhemaji. With the integration of East Assam Milk Union Ltd., its network has extended deeply into Upper Assam.
The recently commissioned Panjabari plant, funded under the World Bank-aided APART scheme with an investment of Rs. 49 crore, became operational in March 2024. Meanwhile, the Changsari cattle-feed plant, active since May 2022 and funded by Assam’s RIDF-XXIII program, has received ISO 9001:2015 certification for excellence in quality management.
In addition, WAMUL’s facilities have secured ISO certifications, strengthening their position as leaders in hygienic dairy production in the Northeast.

“The upcoming Rs. 100-crore investment through NDDB will double Panjabari’s processing capacity to 3 lakh liters/day,” said Satya Brata Bose, MD of NEDFL.
Purabi now procures 1.6 lakh liters of milk daily from 51,000 farmers through over 1,300 dairy cooperative societies, playing a pivotal role in rural livelihoods.
