Recall follows testing that found inconsistent levels of essential nutrients in products sold across the United States
Orange City, Iowa: Revival Animal Health, LLC has voluntarily recalled several of its feline milk replacer products after testing identified inconsistent and potentially low levels of essential nutrients, including potassium, copper, folic acid, choline and pyridoxine, also known as vitamin B6.
The company, based in Orange City, Iowa, said the recall affects products marketed under its Breeder’s Edge and Shelter’s Choice brands. The products were distributed nationwide through online retailers and pet stores.
No illnesses associated with the recalled products have been confirmed. However, Revival said it is investigating nine complaints involving potential gastrointestinal and bone-development issues.
Testing Identifies Potential Nutrient Deficiencies
The recall followed third-party testing that indicated a possible nutrient deficiency in one lot of a feline milk replacer product.
In response, Revival conducted additional confirmatory testing across multiple lots. An independent animal nutritionist reviewed the results on August 12 and concluded that manufacturing inconsistencies had resulted in low levels of several nutrients.
The affected nutrients include potassium, copper, folic acid, choline and vitamin B6. These nutrients play important roles in normal growth, metabolism, neurological function and tissue development.
Based on the findings, Revival decided to conduct a voluntary recall of affected products.
The company has also ended its relationship with the contracted manufacturer responsible for producing the recalled products.
Kittens Face Higher Risk
The recall is particularly significant because feline milk replacers are often used for newborn and young kittens that cannot obtain sufficient nutrition from their mother.
Neonatal kittens are considered especially vulnerable because their organ systems are still developing, their growth rate is rapid and they may depend entirely on milk replacer for their nutritional requirements.
According to Revival, deficiencies that may produce limited symptoms in adult animals can have much more serious consequences in developing kittens.
Potential complications associated with inadequate nutrient intake may include anemia, neurological problems, liver dysfunction, kidney damage, skeletal abnormalities and cardiac complications.
Because kittens develop rapidly, signs of nutritional deficiencies can potentially appear within days or weeks.

FDA Aware of the Voluntary Recall
The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Revival’s action highlights the importance of nutritional consistency in milk replacer products, particularly those intended for neonatal animals. Even when a product appears suitable for feeding, variations in essential nutrient concentrations can create significant risks for animals whose nutritional requirements are highly dependent on milk replacement products.
The company said it is continuing to investigate the reported complaints and the manufacturing issues that contributed to the nutrient inconsistencies.
