Russia has announced a suspension of dairy imports from Armenia effective 27 July, citing concerns over food safety, product traceability, and raw milk sourcing. The move has sparked a dispute between the two countries, with Armenian authorities rejecting the allegations and reaffirming the safety of their dairy products.

Russian regulator Rosselkhoznadzor stated that recent inspections revealed alleged traceability gaps, unverified raw milk sourced from smallholders, and the use of third-country ingredients in certain high-fat dairy products exported to Russia. Officials also expressed concerns regarding Armenia’s regulatory oversight and potential biosecurity risks.

Armenia’s Food Safety Inspectorate has strongly denied the allegations, stating that all dairy processing facilities undergo regular inspections and that exported products are manufactured using laboratory-tested raw milk. The agency added that any non-compliant products are immediately withdrawn and destroyed in accordance with national food safety regulations.

Armenian officials also questioned Russia’s decision, noting that joint inspections conducted by experts from both countries between 14 and 21 July reportedly identified no violations related to contaminated milk or unauthorised imported raw materials.
