The Bihar cabinet has approved the establishment of five new dairy plants, including two milk powder processing units, at an estimated cost of ₹316 crore. The move aims to harness the state’s dairy potential, enhance milk supply, and create employment opportunities at the local level.
According to the Cabinet Secretariat Department’s Additional Chief Secretary S. Siddharth, the proposal was cleared under the Animal and Fish Resources Department. It will be financed through a SIDBI Cluster Development Fund (SCDF) loan.
Two dairy plants with a processing capacity of 2 lakh litres per day (LPD) each will be set up in Darbhanga and Wazirganj (Gaya), while a third plant with 1 lakh LPD capacity will come up in Gopalganj district. The Darbhanga facility will cost ₹71.32 crore, while the plants at Gaya and Gopalganj will require investments of ₹50.27 crore and ₹54.73 crore, respectively.
In addition, two milk powder plants with a capacity of 30 metric tonnes per day (MTPD) each will be established in Dehri-on-Sone (Rohtas) and Sitamarhi districts at a cost of ₹69.66 crore and ₹70.33 crore, respectively.
“These plants will help ensure a steady supply of quality milk to consumers, strengthen the dairy infrastructure in Bihar, and generate employment opportunities,” Siddharth stated.
The decision aligns with Bihar’s broader efforts to develop the dairy sector in India, particularly by supporting milk cooperatives and strengthening rural livelihoods through enhanced dairy processing capacity.
