Optimising milk production and animal health – DairyDimension

Numurkah, VIC: The Maize Association of Australia (MAA) will host a free event on Thursday, October 2, at the Shamrock Hotel, Numurkah, bringing together leading experts to discuss innovations in dairy nutrition, animal health, and milk production.

Feeding Strategies with Maize Grain and Silage

Steven Little will lead sessions on optimising dairy cow diets with maize. He will cover the benefits of maize grain compared to other grains, integrating maize silage into milking cow rations, and balancing diets that include multiple starch sources. In addition, Little will share the latest research on the immediate and carryover effects of feeding maize grain to freshly calved cows, including impacts on feed intake and milk output. He will also explain how replacing part of wheat or barley with maize grain can improve efficiency and support higher milk yields.

Maximising Silage Efficiency

John Auer from MAA will discuss practical strategies to make maize silage a cost-effective summer crop. He will highlight key steps to maximise yield while minimising risk, and best practices for harvest to ensure top-quality silage. Auer’s session will equip farmers with actionable advice to optimise both crop output and feed quality, ultimately supporting dairy productivity.

A Valuable Learning Opportunity

The event aims to provide dairy farmers and feed producers with up-to-date information, practical insights, and innovative strategies to enhance animal health and milk production. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage directly with experts, ask questions, and apply the latest techniques in maize feeding and silage management for improved operational efficiency.
