ICAR–NDRI Hosts Animal Health Camp in Tripura to Strengthen Livestock Farmer

The ICAR–National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), Eastern Regional Station, Kalyani, West Bengal, organised a one-day Animal Health and Input Distribution Camp at the Conference Hall of Bagma Agri Producer Company Limited (BAPCL) in Gomati District, Tripura. The initiative, held under the NDRI–NEH Project, focused on improving livestock health, productivity, and the income of rural farmers in the North East.

Promoting Integrated Farming Amid Climate Challenges

Addressing the gathering, Dr Ashok Santra, Principal Scientist at NDRI, underscored the importance of agriculture and animal husbandry in sustaining livelihoods in the northeastern states. He emphasised that integrated farming systems are becoming increasingly vital, especially given erratic rainfall patterns and the wider impacts of climate change on crop production.

Wide Participation and Farmer Support

The programme drew more than 120 livestock farmers from Gomati, South Tripura, Khowai, and Sepahijala districts. Attendees received key inputs, including chicklets, ducklings, livestock feed, mineral mixtures, vitamins, calcium supplements, and essential veterinary supplies.

The event was attended by senior scientists from NDRI, including Dr M. Karunakaran, Dr Ajoy Mandal, and Dr Mohan Mandal, alongside local veterinary officers and representatives of BAPCL.

Knowledge Sharing and Practical Engagement

Dr Santra urged farmers to adopt scientific practices in livestock rearing to enhance productivity and profitability. Sudip Majumder, Managing Director of BAPCL, expressed appreciation for NDRI’s consistent support in advancing livestock-based livelihoods in Tripura.

An interactive session also enabled farmers to engage with experts on issues ranging from disease control to nutrition and animal care. The camp demonstrated the value of collaborative initiatives between ICAR–NDRI and grassroots organisations like BAPCL in empowering rural communities.
