Assam Governor Calls for Sustainable Dairy and Livestock Growth

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya has urged stakeholders to pursue sustainable and inclusive growth in Assam’s dairy, livestock, and cooperative sectors, stressing the need to blend technology with skill and innovation.

Inaugurating a two-day conclave on Development of Dairy, Animal Husbandry, and Cooperatives in Assam at the Assam Administrative Staff College, he said strengthening these sectors is key to empowering rural communities, especially women. Organised by Raj Bhavan, Assam, along with ICAR–NDRI and state departments, the event gathered experts, policymakers, and farmers to explore strategies for self-reliance and rural growth.

The Governor praised Assam’s progress through the Assam Dairy Development Scheme and Purabi Dairy Cooperatives, and lauded initiatives like the National Livestock Mission, AHIDF, and Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan for promoting entrepreneurship and women’s participation.

“Technology alone cannot drive progress; skilled and motivated people are equally essential,” Acharya noted, calling for more training in dairy management, veterinary care, and sustainable practices. He urged Assam to aim for self-sufficiency in milk and livestock production, positioning these sectors as engines of rural industrialisation and youth-led innovation.

The conclave features sessions on breeding, animal health, nutrition, and cooperative models, with participation from experts including Dr Dheer Singh (ICAR–NDRI) and Dr Amit Vyas (Amul Dairy).
