From 10 kg of paneer to a ₹12,700 crore dairy business: The Milky Mist story

At just 16 years old, Sathish Kumar T. stepped into his family’s struggling milk distribution business in Erode, Tamil Nadu. Decades later, that small operation has evolved into Milky Mist Dairy Food, a major Indian value-added dairy company with a post-listing market capitalisation of more than ₹12,700 crore.

From milk distribution to value-added dairy

Kumar left school at 16 to help his family operate a milk distribution business that transported nearly 3,000 litres of milk a day to Bengaluru. However, the business struggled to generate sustainable returns.

A customer buying milk from the family business gave Kumar an idea. He noticed that the customer was converting the milk into paneer and selling it to hotels.

Instead of competing in the low-margin liquid milk business, Kumar saw an opportunity to move into value-added dairy products.

Learning paneer-making through experimentation

Without access to modern online resources such as Google or YouTube, Kumar learned commercial paneer-making through repeated experimentation.

After several failed attempts, he developed a workable process and, in 1993, took his first 10-kg batch of paneer to Bengaluru.

The initial products were sold to hotels and restaurants through dealers. By 1995, the business was reportedly selling around 50–100 kg of paneer per day, encouraging Kumar to expand further into processed dairy.

Building the Milky Mist brand

The company gradually moved away from liquid milk and concentrated on value-added products.

Its portfolio expanded beyond paneer to include:

  • Paneer
  • Curd
  • Butter
  • Ghee
  • Cheese
  • Yoghurt
  • Ice cream
  • Other processed dairy products

Kumar entered the retail market in 1997, launching the Milky Mist brand.

According to the company’s history, MMD Dairy was established as a partnership in 1999, renamed Milky Mist Dairy Food in 2006 and became a public limited company in 2025.

Rapid growth in revenue and profit

Milky Mist’s financial performance has expanded significantly in recent years.

Financial year Revenue Profit after tax
2024 ₹1,826.86 crore ₹19.44 crore
2025 ₹2,354.79 crore
2026 ₹3,145.01 crore ₹127.01 crore

The company’s growth reflects the increasing demand for packaged and value-added dairy products in India.

Strong stock market debut

Milky Mist Dairy Food made its stock market debut with a strong investor response.

The company’s ₹1,553-crore IPO was subscribed 56.12 times, while its shares opened at ₹165 on both NSE and BSE, representing a premium of about 17.86% over the ₹140 upper issue price.

The listing pushed the company’s market capitalisation to approximately ₹12,702.42 crore.

A shift from milk to value creation

Milky Mist’s journey highlights a broader trend in India’s dairy industry: moving from commodity milk towards higher-value processed and branded dairy products.

What began with a small milk operation and a 10-kg batch of paneer has grown into a diversified dairy business spanning multiple categories.

The company’s story demonstrates how product innovation, value addition and a focus on branded dairy products can transform a traditional milk business into a large-scale consumer food company.
