Purabi Expands Urban Retail Presence and Enters Traditional Sweets Market

Second GMDA Milk Booth Opens at Adabari

Northeast India’s largest dairy cooperative, Purabi Dairy, has opened its second prefabricated milk booth under its partnership with the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). The new kiosk, located near Atal Udyan, Adabari, aims to give park-goers, residents and daily commuters easier access to fresh dairy products.

GMDA Chairman Narayan Deka inaugurated the booth in the presence of senior GMDA officials and Purabi representatives. This Adabari outlet is the second of three kiosks identified by GMDA to strengthen last-mile dairy availability in Guwahati. The first booth opened at Nehru Park on 20 November, receiving a positive public response. The third kiosk, near Shradhanjali Kanan, will open soon.

Strengthening Public Access to Safe Dairy

Speaking at the inauguration, Deka said the kiosks create “modern, hygienic and convenient touchpoints” for families seeking quality dairy. Anant Lal Gyani, Secretary for Cooperation, Government of Assam, added that such partnerships show how coordinated efforts between state agencies and cooperatives improve consumer access while supporting the state’s dairy vision.

Purabi products are processed by WAMUL and marketed by NEDFL, a joint venture of the Government of Assam and NDDB. NEDFL has been expanding its distribution footprint to meet rising demand for safe, high-quality dairy across the Northeast.

Cold-Chain Kiosks to Improve Last-Mile Delivery

The new booths feature cold-chain-enabled visi-coolers, freezers and insulated storage to maintain freshness throughout the day. These prefabricated structures procured under the World Bank-funded APART project also support Purabi’s franchise-based kiosk model, which is creating new livelihood opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

WAMUL Managing Director Sameer Kumar Parida said the Atal Udyan booth strengthens Purabi’s direct connection with consumers while improving income opportunities for member farmers.

Purabi Dairy Forays Into Traditional Sweets

Alongside its retail expansion, Purabi has diversified into the traditional Indian sweets segment with the launch of Purabi Mithai. Produced by WAMUL and marketed by NEDFL, the new line marks Purabi’s entry into a fast-growing consumer category.

NEDFL Managing Director Satya Brata Bose called the range a “natural extension” of Purabi’s trusted dairy products. He stressed their commitment to offering fresh, authentic and hygienically prepared sweets to households across the region.

Parida added that Purabi Mithai will drive higher milk procurement, ensuring better returns for farmers and strengthening Assam’s dairy ecosystem, an expansion supported by the state government.

Linking Urban Demand with Rural Livelihoods

The traditional sweets initiative is more than a business expansion. It aims to channel urban demand for mithai into higher value for rural producers. By converting more milk into value-added products, Purabi hopes to support farmer incomes while meeting consumer demand for high-quality sweets.

As part of the launch celebrations, the Assam government felicitated five progressive dairy farmers associated with Purabi for their contributions to the sector.

Driving Inclusive Dairy Growth in Assam

With stronger retail presence and new product offerings, Purabi continues to play a central role in Assam’s dairy transformation. Its dual focus on market expansion and farmer welfare highlights a model of inclusive growth connecting modern consumers with the rural dairy economy that supports thousands of livelihoods.
