Vadodara: Just like you would switch on the air-conditioners in the scorching summer, cattle too will get respite from blistering heat inside their ‘tabelas’.
Researchers at the Community Science Centre (CSC) of Vallabh Vidyanagar- based Sardar Patel University (SPU) have developed an affordable cooling system for livestock. The timer-based stem has been registered as a design patent by the Government of India.
This system will not just save cattle from heat strokes and respiratory problems that swell during summers, but also improve their milk yield and fat content which otherwise depletes during these months. Summer is traditionally considered a lean season in the dairy industry.
Unlike the conventional cooling systems are expensive, the indigenously developed one costs Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 to cover herd sizes ranging from one to 12 animals.

Unlike the conventional cooling systems are expensive, the indigenously developed one costs Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 to cover herd sizes ranging from one to 12 animals. “We wanted to develop a scientific solution to the problem faced by the cattle- rearers. We wanted to invent a solution that can provide comfort to the cattle during the summer which is getting hotter every year due to global warming,” said CSC director Vibha Vaishnav.
Vaishnav developed the system with science communicator Chandni Marwadi and project officer Sonal Solanki.
“Farms having huge herd sizes rely on costly sprinkler systems to protect their cows and buffaloes. However a majority of small dairy farmers have smaller herds. Our system is suitable for those having around 10-12 cattle or even less,” she said.
“This is a digital system that is four to five times cheaper than the conventional sprinkler systems installed in large farms. Earlier, small dairy farmers used to keep their cattle cool using wet gunny bags or bathing them once in a day,” she said.
