Kila Raipur, Ludhiana – In a proactive step to combat rising infertility among dairy animals, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, recently conducted a reproductive health awareness camp at Kila Raipur village. The initiative, supported by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under its Farmer FIRST programme, focused on restoring productivity in dairy cattle and buffaloes through expert-led diagnosis and treatment.
The camp was spearheaded by Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education and nodal officer of the project, alongside Dr. Parminder Singh, Principal Investigator. It drew significant participation from local dairy farmers, who brought their animals for examination and treatment.
Veterinary experts Dr. Rajesh and Dr. Bilawal Singh conducted thorough screenings, addressing prevalent but often underdiagnosed reproductive issues such as anestrus, follicular cysts, and silent estrus. They emphasised that these conditions are major contributors to prolonged calving intervals and declining milk yields.
“Infertility not only delays calving but also disrupts the animal’s entire lactation cycle, leading to a direct economic setback for dairy farmers,” Dr. Rajesh explained. Dr. Bilawal Singh further emphasised preventive care, urging farmers to monitor animal behaviour closely and seek early intervention.
Mineral mixtures were distributed by Parteek Singh to support long-term reproductive health, reinforcing the role of balanced nutrition in optimising both fertility and milk production. “Nutritional deficiencies are a silent but significant cause of infertility. Regular mineral supplementation can make a remarkable difference,” he said.
This camp aligns with broader efforts to enhance dairy productivity and address critical issues facing the Indian dairy industry, especially in states like Punjab, where dairy farming is a key livelihood.
