Kerala Unveils Dairy Insurance Scheme to Safeguard Farmers Against Livestock Losses

Thrikkaripur, Kerala – In a significant step toward improving farmer welfare and strengthening the dairy ecosystem, Kerala’s Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Minister J Chinchu Rani announced the launch of a comprehensive dairy insurance scheme aimed at protecting farmers from financial losses due to livestock fatalities.

Speaking at a farmers’ meeting in Neeleswaram block, the minister emphasised that every initiative by the Dairy Development Department is rooted in the goal of improving the livelihoods and resilience of Kerala’s dairy farmers. The Neeleswaram dairy development unit and local dairy cooperatives jointly organised the event, with the backing of Milma, the Animal Husbandry Department, and Kerala Feeds.

💡 Key Highlights of the Insurance Scheme:

  • ₹37,500 for cows lost to skin diseases or extreme heat stress
  • ₹20,000 for calf mortality
  • ₹10,000 for stillbirth compensation

The announcement also coincided with the inauguration of a hygienic milk collection facility, established by the Edayilakode Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society, reinforcing the state’s commitment to quality and safety in milk procurement.

The event saw participation from top local leaders and officials, including Neeleswaram Block Panchayat President Madhavan Maniyara, Deputy Director of Dairy Development Sijon Johnson Kunnath, and several panchayat presidents and cooperative representatives. Dairy farmers were recognised for their service and contributions, underlining the sector’s importance to Kerala’s rural economy.

“This scheme is not just financial assistance—it’s a safety net that reflects our commitment to a stable and sustainable dairy sector in Kerala,” said Minister Chinchu Rani.

This initiative comes at a crucial time as Kerala faces rising climate-related stress on livestock and aims to fortify its position in the Indian dairy industry through forward-looking dairy policy and farmer-centric programs.
