Odisha’s Go-Palan Yojana Gains Traction with High-Yielding Cattle Induction

Odisha’s Go-Palan Yojana Accelerates with Induction of High-Yielding Dairy Cattle

Bhubaneswar, May 9, 2025 — In a significant boost to Odisha’s dairy economy, the state government’s Go-Palan Yojana (GPY)—a flagship program under the Mukhyamantri Kamdhenu Yojana (MKY)—has made remarkable progress in just three months. Over 1,000 high-yielding dairy cows have been successfully inducted from states like Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu, bringing fresh momentum to the state’s milk production drive.

The scheme, designed to transform rural livelihoods and increase dairy self-reliance, offers up to 70% subsidy to farmers acquiring superior milk-producing cattle, each capable of yielding at least 10 litres of milk per day. Cattle procurement is carried out transparently through private suppliers, with farmers free to select breeds that best suit their farm conditions.

“We’re seeing enthusiasm at the grassroots level—from youth to seasoned cattle keepers. The program is empowering farmers and reshaping the dairy economy,” said Gokulananda Mallick, Minister of Fisheries & Animal Resources Development.

Gender Equity in Focus

A notable milestone was reached in Kandhamal district, where three women dairy farmers became the first beneficiaries to implement GPY-supported projects. Their success underscores the scheme’s focus on inclusive economic growth, promoting gender equity alongside rural development.

Institutional Push and State-Level Support

The initiative received a strong push during the Matsya-Pranee Samavesh Odisha (MPSO)–2025, where approval letters were issued by Minister Mallick and Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar Vashishth, signaling high-level commitment to scaling the program statewide.

With high-yielding cows now reaching remote tribal regions, GPY is being hailed as a potential game-changer for Odisha’s dairy sector—enhancing farmer incomes, ensuring consistent milk supply, and encouraging young entrepreneurs to enter the livestock economy.
