🐄 Bihar’s Dairy Success Story: How Dilip Kumar Turned 6 Cows into a Model Dairy Enterprise

Arwal, Bihar – May 2025
In a state often overlooked for agri-entrepreneurship, Dilip Kumar, a postgraduate from Jhunathi village in Arwal district, has proven that scientific dairy farming can thrive in Bihar. From six cows and modest returns to a 40-cattle modern dairy shed, Kumar’s journey reflects the potential of rural innovation and sustainable practices.

🧑‍🔬 From Corporate Job to Cow Shed: A Calculated Pivot

Faced with a low-paying private job, Kumar returned to his ancestral 26-acre farmland and boldly decided to enter dairy farming. With just six high-yielding dairy cows, he began a methodical and scientific approach to building his herd and business.

Today, his modernised shed houses 40 high-breed cattle, and he runs a milk collection centre, ensuring direct market access and timely payments.

“Dairy farming offers a viable path to financial success, particularly in India’s expanding dairy market,” says Kumar.

🌾 Integrated Farming: Fodder, Feed, and Financial Discipline

Kumar’s model combines fodder cultivation, nutritional science, and waste-to-energy innovation:

  • 4 acres dedicated to hyper Napier grass, grown using advanced techniques. He now sells fodder to farmers across districts.
  • Homemade balanced feed rations using fenugreek, turmeric, minerals, soya husk, and oilcake, customised per lactation cycle.
  • A biogas plant fueled by cattle waste, used for cooking and lighting, cuts fuel costs while improving sustainability.
  • Regular knowledge upgrades via Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), agricultural universities, and ICAR outreach programs.

💹 Impact: From Modest Returns to Award-Winning Profits

Kumar’s annual earnings from dairy have crossed ₹1 lakh, more than doubling his initial income. His success has improved household stability, enabled better education for his children, and inspired other rural youth to pursue livestock entrepreneurship.

In 2023, he was awarded the “Millionaire Farmer Award” by ICAR, a national recognition for innovation-driven farmers in India’s dairy sector.
