Amul Dairy Strengthens Bovine Genetics with Advanced Sexed Semen Labs at Ode

In a significant boost to the Indian dairy industry and ongoing efforts in dairy farming innovations, Amul Dairy has inaugurated two advanced sexed semen laboratories at its Semen Station in Ode, Gujarat. This development marks a major milestone in improving bovine genetics and enhancing dairy productivity within the Amul milk shed.

The facilities were inaugurated by Shri Sabhesinh Parmar, Chairman of Amul Dairy, in the presence of Shri Vijaybhai Fulabhai Patel, Vice Chairman, members of the Board of Directors, and Dr Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF. The inauguration reflects Amul’s continued leadership in dairy cooperative news and its commitment to strengthening India’s dairy ecosystem.

During the ceremony, Dr Amit Vyas, Managing Director of Amul Dairy, presented a comprehensive overview of the organisation’s breeding legacy, which dates back to 1952. He highlighted the transition from conventional liquid semen production to cutting-edge reproductive technologies, including IVF laboratories and advanced genetic solutions. This evolution underscores Amul’s role in driving dairy technology in India and supporting long-term dairy production news.

The first facility, the Amul Gausort Sexed Semen Laboratory, has been established in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). With an initial capacity of 1 lakh sex-sorted doses annually, scalable to 5 lakh doses, the centre leverages indigenously developed technology. This technology, inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in November 2024, aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and strengthens India’s capabilities in eco-friendly dairy India and precision dairy farming.

The second facility, the Amul Ge-Nova Sexed Semen Laboratory, has been developed in partnership with Genus ABS. It is expected to produce approximately 0.7 million sexed semen doses annually, further accelerating dairy market growth and improving access to superior bovine genetics.

Together, these facilities will enable a combined annual production capacity of around 1.4 million sexed semen doses. The Ode Semen Station, already a CMU-A grade and ISO 9001:2015 certified facility, has an annual production capacity of 10 million conventional semen doses and 0.8 million sexed semen doses.

Currently, Amul Dairy supplies nearly 1.5 million doses of conventional and sexed semen within its milk shed and markets over 6.5 million doses annually to dairy cooperatives and government institutions across India. The expansion in sexed semen production is expected to significantly benefit milk producers while addressing the growing national demand for improved bovine genetics, a key factor in India’s dairy trends and dairy industry forecast.

As part of its long-term strategy, Amul aims to position itself as a trusted provider of bovine genetics solutions. By focusing on technological excellence and genetic advancement, the cooperative continues to strengthen India’s standing in the global dairy sector and contribute to sustainable growth in the Indian dairy sector.

The event also saw participation from senior representatives of Genus ABS, including Mr Jim Low, Chief Operating Officer; Mr Kevin Hall, Senior Director – Supply Chain; Mr Mrinesh Singh Rawat, General Manager – India Sales & Support; and Mr Hul Gupta, Regional Operations Manager – Production, along with senior officials from Amul Dairy.
