In a focused effort to enhance livestock reproductive efficiency and dairy productivity, the Veterinary Hospital Diglipur, under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), organised a Veterinary Infertility Camp at Deshbandhu Gram, Madhupur Gram Panchayat, in the North and Middle Andaman District.
The camp catered to 15 local farmers, with 27 animals examined for infertility-related issues.
🧬 Addressing Reproductive Challenges in Dairy Animals
Veterinarians diagnosed:
- 3 cases of repeat breeding
- 2 cases of anoestrus (absence of heat cycle)
- 1 case each of metritis and cervicitis
These conditions, if left untreated, can significantly reduce milk yields and increase calving intervals, thereby undermining the income from dairy farming.
“Fertility management is a critical pillar of dairy productivity. Timely diagnosis and nutritional support can restore reproductive health and boost milk production,” said Dr. Bhojane Nagnath Martand, Senior Veterinary Officer, Diglipur.
🌿 Support Measures for Health & Productivity
In addition to diagnostic care:
- Mineral mixture powder was distributed to all 15 farmers to support nutritional balance and hormonal health
- 21 animals were dewormed to reduce parasite load, which often contributes to infertility
The camp was led by:
- Dr. Bhojane Nagnath Martand, Senior Veterinary Officer, Diglipur
- Dr. Kshitij Pareek, Senior Veterinary Officer, Veterinary Dispensary Billiground
- Supporting veterinary staff from the Diglipur block
🚜 Why It Matters for Rural Dairy
This initiative is part of AH&VS’s strategy to:
- Deliver doorstep veterinary services
- Strengthen rural livelihoods through livestock care
- Enhance milk production in remote areas like the Andaman & Nicobar Islands
Such on-ground infertility management is key to transforming underproductive animals into sustainable milk sources, especially for smallholder farmers in island economies.
