Pune-based dairy company Provilac has raised US$14 million from Panthera Growth Partners in its first institutional funding round, as demand for high-protein nutrition continues to create new opportunities within India’s dairy sector.
The company plans to use the fresh capital to expand manufacturing capacity, accelerate product innovation and enter new markets, with Bengaluru identified as a key expansion market. Provilac is positioning its products around the growing consumer interest in convenient, protein-rich nutrition that can be incorporated into everyday diets.
High-Protein Milk Drives Product Proposition
Provilac’s flagship high-protein milk is designed to deliver 25 grams of protein per 250 ml serving, which the company says is roughly three times the protein content of regular milk.
Unlike protein beverages that rely on added protein powders, Provilac uses ultrafiltration technology to concentrate naturally occurring milk proteins. This allows the company to retain dairy as the primary source of protein while developing a product targeted at consumers seeking higher-protein options.
The approach reflects a broader shift in the dairy industry, where companies are increasingly exploring functional and value-added dairy products beyond traditional milk, curd, paneer and other staples.
More Than 50,000 Households Served Daily
Provilac has already established a presence across several major Indian markets. The company currently serves more than 50,000 households every day across Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR and Jaipur.
A significant part of its distribution model is based on an app-driven subscription system, giving the company a direct relationship with consumers. The model also provides an avenue for recurring purchases and potentially enables Provilac to better understand consumption patterns and preferences.
The company is now preparing to expand its presence in Bengaluru through partnerships with FirstClub and Blinkit Gourmet, increasing access to its high-protein dairy products beyond its existing markets.
Expansion Into Functional Dairy
Beyond high-protein milk, Provilac is developing additional dairy products designed around nutrition and convenience. Its product pipeline includes high-protein dairy offerings fortified with vitamins and micronutrients, along with other fresh-dairy formats.
This expansion could allow the company to participate in a wider range of the functional nutrition market while retaining its positioning as a fresh-dairy business.

Focus on Quality and Testing
Quality assurance is another component of Provilac’s positioning. The company conducts quarterly third-party testing at NABL-accredited laboratories.
The testing programme covers nutritional parameters, antibiotic residues, adulteration, aflatoxin, microbial analysis and other relevant safety parameters. Such testing is particularly important as consumers become more attentive to food quality, nutritional claims and the safety of dairy products.
India’s Dairy Market Moves Toward Protein
The funding comes as protein consumption becomes an increasingly important theme across India’s food and beverage industry. While traditional dairy remains an important source of protein for Indian consumers, newer products are attempting to offer higher protein concentrations and more clearly defined nutritional benefits.
For Provilac, the opportunity extends beyond selling another packaged milk product. Its strategy is to make high-protein fresh dairy an everyday nutrition category, rather than positioning protein primarily through supplements, powders or specialised sports-nutrition products.
The Bengaluru expansion and planned product launches will therefore be important tests of whether consumers are willing to pay a premium for higher-protein dairy as part of their regular household consumption.
With fresh capital available for manufacturing, innovation and geographic expansion, Provilac is looking to build on its existing consumer base and capture a larger share of India’s emerging high-protein dairy market.
